Youths in Kenya Advised on Safe Overseas Employment Practices

EMBU — During the 2nd Mt. Kenya East Diaspora Jobs Fair in Embu, government officials underscored the importance of verifying the legality of recruitment agencies for youths interested in overseas jobs. The event aimed to connect job seekers with legitimate opportunities and prevent exploitation by unscrupulous agents.

According to Kenya News Agency, youths looking to work abroad, particularly on marine vessels like cruise ships, should ensure their recruiting agencies are registered with the National Employment Authority and the Ministry of Labour. Njogu emphasized the importance of accessing information on marine work recruiters through the Kenya Maritime Authority’s website to safeguard against fraudulent contracts. “The Ministry of Labour has cracked down on rogue agents who leave their clients stranded in foreign countries,” she stated at the fair, highlighting the government’s efforts to protect its citizens.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire spoke about the significant turnout at the fair, noting that over 300 youths attended daily, reflecting the severity of unemployment in the region. Mbarire announced plans to establish a fund in the next budget to assist youths from disadvantaged backgrounds in obtaining the necessary documents for overseas employment.

Additionally, Technical and Vocation Education Training PS, Dr. Esther Muoria, shared that TVET institution trainers have been updated on the latest industry demands to better prepare their students. Dr. Muoria also mentioned new certification processes for skilled workers lacking formal qualifications and a restructuring of TVET programs into specific skill sets to expedite training for overseas job markets.
