Yatenga Region Sees Launch of ‘Guardian of Our Values’ Project to Promote Cultural and Democratic Values

OUAHIGOUYA—The Association for New Cultural and Artistic Revival (ARCAN) launched the “Guardian of Our Values” (GAVAL) project on August 16, 2024, in a ceremony presided over by Issouf Sawadogo, technical advisor representing the Governor of the Northern region. The project aims to strengthen the cultural and democratic values of young people and women in the municipalities of Kaya and Ouahigouya.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Germain Ouédraogo, the GAVAL project is part of the association’s ongoing efforts since 2017 to combat violent extremism by enhancing the capacities of youth in areas of social cohesion and resilience. The project will provide a training and information framework focused on exploring traditional and cultural democratic values.

Mr. Ouédraogo explained that GAVAL will conduct action research, develop a local map of cultural and traditional democratic values, and train approximately sixty young people on citizen participation and themes related to living together. The project aims to empower young people to become guardians of cultural and democratic principles within their communities.

Issouf Sawadogo, speaking on behalf of the regional governor, praised ARCAN’s consistent efforts, particularly in the challenging security and humanitarian context of the region. He also expressed gratitude to the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium, which, through its “Civic Space” project, has provided technical and financial support for GAVAL.

Mr. Sawadogo assured ARCAN of the administration’s support throughout the 21-month implementation period of the project, aiming to achieve the project’s goals.
