Yatenga: A press point to discuss the fate of 1,600 students from Yamwaya high school

The Association of former students of the Antoine Roche-Lycée Yamwaya Normal Course and the Parents' Association (APE) of the said establishment organized on Sunday, September 10 in Ouahigouya, a meeting with the press, in order to discuss the fate of 1,600 students for the 2023-2024 school year. These students saw their school destroyed by a violent wind last Sunday, June 18.

On June 18, 2023, a violent wind blew apart seventeen classrooms at Yamwaya high school in Yatenga province (North), including three offices, a teachers' room and a censor's office.

The high school welcomed around 1,600 students, representing more than half of the establishment's total enrollment.

Faced with this situation and in view of the imminence of the 2023-2024 school year, the organizers of the meeting called on the ministry in charge of secondary education, the education stakeholders, and the nationals of the city of Naaba Kango , to help students in difficulty.

This cry of the heart was launched, through a press conference in Ouahigouya, by the Association of former students of the Cours Normal Antoine Roche-Lycée Yamwaya and the Parents' Association (APE) of the said establishment.

This meeting with the press was an opportunity to reflect on the reception of students, the functioning of Yamwaya high school and the various consequences in the event of non-rehabilitation of the school infrastructure.

The president of the parents' association, Assami Guiro and that of the Yamwaya alumni association, Adama Ouédraogo and his comrades urged the authorities to resolve the problem before the start of the 2023-2024 school year. They also pleaded for the mobilization of funds to the tune of 40 million FCFA to deal with the emergency.

To this end, possible provisional solutions have been considered, in order to allow the establishment to be operational from the next school year.

This involves, among other things, the making of prefabricated classrooms, the rental of buildings and talks with teaching staff to increase class numbers, etc.

Created in 1948, Yamwaya high school is the largest establishment in the Northern region which accommodates more than 3,000 students today.

In a difficult security context, it brings together 10 establishments relocated in several municipalities in Yatenga and is part of the resilience of the education system in the Northern region.
