BRAZIL: Chinese President Xi Jinping has been a prominent advocate for the Group of Twenty (G20), urging member nations to embrace their roles as major international and regional players in promoting global development and well-being. As leaders gather for the 19th G20 summit in Brazil, the world anticipates China’s strategies for addressing current global uncertainties.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the G20 has historically played a pivotal role in steering the global economy through crises, such as the 2008 financial meltdown and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Under Xi’s leadership, China has actively participated in these efforts, calling for enhanced international policy coordination and reduction of trade barriers to stabilize global industrial and supply chains.

Xi’s approach has been described as systematic and comprehensive by experts, enriching the G20’s policy toolkit. A notable achievement under his leadership was China’s implementation of the G20’s Debt Service Suspension Initiative, providi
ng significant debt relief to low-income countries during the pandemic.

Xi envisions a broader role for the G20, advocating for common development and equal rights to development, particularly for developing nations. His leadership at the 2016 G20 summit in Hangzhou marked a shift towards long-term governance, with a focus on sustainable development and support for African industrialization.

China has also worked to increase the representation of developing countries in global economic governance. A significant step was China’s support for the African Union’s membership in the G20, which was realized a year after Xi’s endorsement.

Xi’s vision for the G20 aligns with his broader goal of building a fairer and more sustainable world order. At the Bali G20 summit, he emphasized the need for global cooperation to address pressing challenges like geopolitical tensions, inadequate governance, and food and energy crises.

Despite rising protectionism, Xi remains committed to globalization and an open world economy
. At the 2019 Osaka summit, he announced measures to further open China’s market, reinforcing its role as a key driver of global economic growth.

Xi’s overarching vision of a community with a shared future for mankind is reflected in initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development, Security, and Civilization Initiatives. These efforts underscore China’s commitment to addressing global challenges through cooperation and development.

In a world marked by uncertainty, Xi’s call for rational solutions and China’s predictable approach offer stability and hope for addressing collective global issues.
