Xi Jinping Calls for Enhanced Disaster Relief Following Super Typhoon Yagi’s Devastation in Southern China


HAINAN—Following the severe impact of Super Typhoon Yagi, which struck southern China last Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for intensified disaster relief efforts to ensure the safety and recovery of the affected regions.



According to Namibia Press Agency, President Xi, who also serves as the general secretary of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the importance of mobilizing rescue operations, efficiently relocating and resettling affected residents, and preventing secondary disasters to minimize further casualties. He also mandated the rapid repair of damaged infrastructure, including transportation, electricity, and communication systems, to expedite the return to normalcy.



Premier Li Qiang, along with the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, has been actively monitoring the typhoon’s progression and implementing preventive measures to combat the aftermath of the disaster. The Headquarters has deployed teams to the provinces of Hainan and Guangdong to lead the rescue and relief efforts.



The typhoon, marked as the 11th of the year, affected over 1.2 million people across Hainan, Guangdong, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, resulting in three deaths and 95 injuries. It has also caused significant disruptions, including widespread power outages, communication breakdowns, and structural damages, with some areas already seeing partial restoration of services.
