Beijing: Top-ranked Chinese paddlers Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha secured their spots in the men's and women's singles quarterfinals with straight-game victories at the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash. In addition, the duo reached the mixed doubles final, where they will face compatriots Huang Youzheng and Chen Yi.
According to Namibia Press Agency, after a narrow victory over Poland's Milosz Redzimski in the previous round, world champion Wang Chuqin displayed improved form, defeating South Korea's An Jae-hyun 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 to advance to the quarterfinals. Sun Yingsha also had a smooth progression, overcoming teammate Wang Xiaotong 11-7, 11-5, 11-5 in the women's singles third round.
In the mixed doubles semifinals, Wang and Sun dominated the Brazilian team of Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi, winning 11-3, 11-3, 11-7. Their next challenge will be against fellow Chinese pair Huang and Chen, who defeated Yuan Licen and Wang Yidi.
Wang expressed surprise at their semifinal win, stating, "Calderano and Takahashi are excellent players, and we didn't expect a 3-0 win before the match. We found a good rhythm and communicated with each other very well to seal the victory." Sun added, "After the World Championships this year, we tried to keep in good form. We have the determination to perform our best."
Elsewhere, Japanese players made a significant impact in the men's singles third round. Yukiya Uda defeated fifth-seeded Truls Moregard of Sweden 3-1, while 18-year-old Sora Matsushima upset sixth-seeded Chinese paddler Liang Jingkun 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Chinese players Lin Shidong, Xiang Peng, Chen Junsong, Chen Xingtong, Wang Yidi, and Wang Manyu also progressed to the singles quarterfinals. However, compatriots Zhou Qihao, Kuai Man, Chen Yi, and Shi Xunyao were eliminated in the singles third round.
In doubles action, three Chinese pairs advanced to the semifinals in both the men's and the women's doubles categories. The men's pairs include Wang Chuqin/Lin Shidong, Huang Youzheng/Wen Ruibo, and Zhou Qihao/Chen Junsong. On the women's side, Chen Xingtong/Qian Tianyi, Xu Yi/Wang Xiaotong, and Kuai Man/Wang Manyu secured their spots in the semifinals.
