Dori: The Liptako region marked World AIDS Day on Friday, December 19, 2025, in Dori, with a ceremony centered on the theme "Overcoming Disruptions, Transforming the AIDS Response." The event saw the participation of government bodies, civil society actors, including the Coalition of Networks and Associations of Burkina Faso (CORAB), and an engaged community.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Vincent de Paul Kalmogo, head of the regional office of the Permanent Secretariat of the National Council for the Fight against AIDS and STIs (SP/CNLS-IST) in the Sahel, emphasized that World AIDS Day serves as a crucial moment to evaluate past actions and explore new strategies in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Kalmogo highlighted that Burkina Faso has achieved encouraging results despite various constraints, attributing this success to the leadership at the state level and the involvement of community actors.
He mentioned several advancements, including the free provision of antiretroviral treatment, free biological tests, and the active participation and funding of community organizations in the fight against AIDS.
These efforts have reportedly led to a significant reduction in HIV prevalence in Burkina Faso, from 7.17% in 1997 to approximately 0.5% nationally. In the Liptako region, the prevalence is currently estimated at 0.2%, showcasing the effectiveness of implemented strategies.
However, Kalmogo urged stakeholders to enhance mobilization and collaboration around the regional branch to develop innovative actions suited to the local context.
Issouf Abdoulaye Ly, representing CORAB, called upon NGOs, decentralized state services, and commercial companies to intensify their involvement in combating AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), aiming for the elimination of the pandemic by 2030.
Adama Koussoub©, the High Commissioner of Yagha Province and president of the ceremony, reassured that despite security and humanitarian challenges, the Burkinabe State remains committed to strengthening its response to AIDS.
He advocated for increased bilateral and multilateral solidarity to accelerate the achievement of desired outcomes.
The ceremony featured awareness and voluntary screening sessions, reflecting the stakeholders' determination to bring services closer to the population.
Through this commemoration, the Liptako region reaffirms its collective commitment to intensifying the fight against HIV/AIDS and working towards a future without AIDS.
