Workers’ Union Decries Delayed Pay

The Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions and Health (KUDHEIHA) representing workers in Kisii and Nyamira counties is appealing to the government to take necessary measures to ensure that non-teaching staff serving the public schools are paid their salaries. In a press release seen by KNA, KUDHEIHA Kisii Branch Secretary, Thomas Mireri said they are petitioning the government through the Ministry of Education to look into the terms and conditions of the school employees and engage the union in reviewing their employment terms.’This reconsideration of the terms and conditions of the employees will enable them to carry out their duties with dignity and meet their financial obligations since the situation now is hard on the employees who cannot take care of their families, get loans, or borrow from banks due to nonpayment of salaries,’ noted Mireri. He lauded the ministry for releasing funds to schools but pointed out that some Boards of Management through the school principals had not paid
the employees since May to date. The Branch Secretary urged the Ministry of Education to investigate the matter and ensure that school principals are paying their salaries since delayed payment is unlawful and violates the rights of the employees. He called upon the school workers to report any injustice to the Union offices and join the union which advocates for favourable working conditions.
