Women and Girls Encouraged to Assert Digital Rights as Global Activism Campaign Launches

Windhoek: Women and girls worldwide are being encouraged to understand and assert their digital rights as the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls commences. Executive Director in the Office of the Prime Minister, Gladice Pickering, announced the start of the initiative, which was originally launched in 2008 under the United Nations Secretary-General's leadership. This year's theme emphasizes the need to 'UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.'

According to Namibia Press Agency, Pickering expressed concern about the digital landscape's role in increasing online abuse and exposure for women and girls. In a video shared with the media, she highlighted the alarming nature of digitalization and the complexities introduced by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which exacerbate the vulnerabilities faced by women and girls, particularly in the context of online abuse.

The World Health Organisation indicates that one in three women globally experiences violence at some point in their lives. As Namibia participates in this global campaign, Pickering also addressed the troubling trend of women and girls perpetrating online violence against each other. She noted that AI tools, such as deepfakes, often facilitate this harmful behavior by producing images and information intended to damage the dignity of others.

Pickering urged women and girls to be aware of their rights, emphasizing the importance of understanding the dangers and consequences of AI misuse. She called for assertiveness in claiming their rights and an informed approach to both the risks and benefits associated with AI technology.

In her closing remarks, Pickering reinforced the message of empowerment and awareness. She stated, 'Know your rights and be assertive about your rights. You have the right to dignity and you have the right to privacy. Know how to be assertive about your rights and know the dangers and also the benefits of AI in this digital world.'
