Windhoek Municipal Council Pledges Support for City Police Transition to Smart Policing.

Windhoek: Mayor of Windhoek, Queen Kamati, has reiterated the Municipal Council’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Windhoek City Police in their shift from traditional policing methods to innovative smart policing strategies.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Windhoek City Police has been transitioning to smart policing by integrating technological advancements such as deploying CCTV cameras across the city and utilizing computer-based statistics to analyze crime data for more effective intervention. This significant move aims to bolster crime prevention efforts and improve public safety.

During a ceremony held on Monday to rename the City Police head office from the PA De Wet Building to the Chief AK Kanime Building, Kamati affirmed the Council’s dedication to facilitating this transition. She emphasized the Council’s promise to continue backing the City Police and Chief Abraham Kanime in embracing smart policing methods.

“As we continue on this path, I want to reassure each one of you as wel
l as Chief Abraham Kanime, that the council remains fully committed to supporting the service through this transition,” Kamati stated. She highlighted that the Council’s investments would focus on providing necessary tools and training to ensure the success of the police force.

Further elaborating, Kamati said, “We will continue to invest in the tools, training, and resources needed to help you succeed,” signaling the Council’s intent to prioritize these areas for sustained support.

Chief Leevi Ileka, Head of the City Police, also addressed the event, revealing that the City Police are currently formulating a Smart Policing Strategy tailored to the specific needs of Windhoek’s environment. He explained that the strategy’s components are derived from an assessment of the city’s surroundings.

“We are busy developing the strategy, and the main components of this strategy are as a result of benchmarking of the city’s surroundings,” Ileka noted. He further expressed the City Police’s desire to adopt a proactive
approach to policing, aiming to prevent crimes before they occur. “We would like to be proactive – where we prevent crime before it happens,” he added.
