Western Cape Flying Squad and City Law Enforcement Arrest Four in Armed Robbery Case

WESTERN CAPE – A collaborative effort between the Western Cape Flying Squad and Law Enforcement from the City of Cape Town led to the arrest of four suspects involved in armed robbery and other related crimes. The suspects are slated to make their first court appearance in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 23, 2023.

According to a news release by South African Police Service, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at approximately 11:20 AM, members of the Western Cape Flying Squad and Law Enforcement responded to an alert concerning a suspicious black Toyota Yaris with potentially cloned registration plates. The vehicle, initially occupied by just the driver, was spotted. As members were about to approach it, three men ran out of a nearby store and entered the vehicle, which then sped away.

A high-speed chase followed, culminating in the vehicle being stopped near Palmeira and Campground Road in Claremont. A search of the vehicle revealed three firearms, clothing items, bedding, cellphones, and a significant amount of cash. All four occupants were arrested and are currently detained at the Claremont police holding cells.

Further investigation indicated that the suspects had just committed an armed robbery at a shop in Claremont. Authorities are also investigating the possibility that the four suspects could be linked to other serious crimes.

The four suspects, aged between 25 and 45, will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ court on charges related to armed robbery, possession of prohibited firearms, fraud, and possession of presumed stolen property.

The provincial management has expressed approval of the commitment and coordination shown by the members involved in bringing the suspects to justice.
