Windhoek: Two people died and another was seriously injured in two separate accidents involving trucks on the Western Bypass in Windhoek in the early hours of Monday. Speaking to the media at the scene, Windhoek City Police spokesperson Katrina Nomboga said the accidents occurred just minutes apart around 02h00 and involved two cargo trucks that overturned along the same stretch of the road near the Bernt Carlsson Road detour.

According to Namibia Press Agency, one truck was carrying livestock, while the second was transporting general merchandise, specifically juice. 'One driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene while his passenger sustained serious injuries. The driver of the second truck later died in the hospital,' she noted. The names and ages of the deceased and injured have been withheld as police continue to investigate.

Several cattle were also killed instantly, while others had to be put down at the scene due to the extent of their injuries. Nomboga noted that the overturned vehicles and wreckage blocked the roadway for several hours, causing major traffic congestion. City Police officers were deployed to manage the flow of vehicles.

'We urge all motorists travelling along the Western Bypass to reduce their speed, exercise caution, and follow the instructions of the traffic officers currently directing traffic at the scene,' she added. The police are investigating the exact cause of both accidents, and further details will be released as information becomes available.
