We Will Not Allow Criminals to Roam Freely: Shikongo

Omuthiya: Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, has declared that the police will not stand by as criminals operate without restraint. Shikongo made this statement during a meeting with junior police officers in the Oshikoto Region, emphasizing a firm stance against crime and a commitment to the freedom of the Namibian people.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Shikongo articulated a clear strategy for the police force, stating, "If we cannot arrest the criminals, then we should disrupt them." He stressed the police's dedication to ensuring that citizens can move freely without fear or restriction, highlighting the importance of maintaining public freedom of movement.

Additionally, Shikongo addressed the importance of fair promotions within the police force, asserting that these should be based on individual merit and the quality of service provided. "Promotions and assignments have nothing to do with tribe, associations or relationships but should be done with the merits one earns through providing services," he stated. He mentioned the recent promotions of 34 officers in the Oshana Region and 19 in Ohangwena, with plans for further promotions in Oshikoto Region by the week's end.

Shikongo also urged police officers to focus on effective policing, building partnerships, and achieving organizational excellence. He concluded by insisting that the common excuse of a lack of available vehicles when communities require police assistance must be eradicated.
