ADDIS ABABA—The Defense War College of Ethiopia is equipping military leaders with the knowledge necessary to understand the country’s geopolitical interests in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, according to Brigadier General Bulti Tadesse, Commander in Chief of the Defense War College. Ethiopia’s strategic position in the Horn of Africa makes its role in Red Sea politics critical, with implications for regional stability and economic imperatives.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, In an interview with ENA, Brigadier General Bulti Tadesse explained that the politics of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden significantly impact Ethiopia’s national interest. The college has been organizing workshops, symposiums, and both long and short-term courses to educate military leaders on these geopolitical issues.
The college aims to cultivate strategic military leaders with a deep understanding of regional geopolitics, enabling them to safeguard Ethiopia’s national interests in various security dimensions. “There is great security politics in the Horn of Africa,” Brigadier General Bulti said, emphasizing the importance of military leaders understanding regional security matters and Ethiopia’s national security principles.
The Defense War College offers master’s and regular diploma programs in strategic leadership, national security, military professionalism, international relations, foreign policy, and diplomacy. It also provides training in internal and regional threat analysis, conflict resolution, military intelligence, and geopolitics. Since its establishment in October 2019, the college has been Ethiopia’s first senior-level strategic security studies and research institution.
The college plans to continue strengthening the defense force in peace and security and regional geopolitics.
