Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has pledged her administration’s commitment to improve budgetary allocation towards sporting activities. She said her administration is committed to ensuring youths exploit their talents and put the county at the top both nationally and globally in diverse sporting activities. Wanga said this will only be possible if sporting activities are supported by the government. ‘We are proud to be associated with some of the big names in sports history. We will therefore do everything we can to maintain that position,’ Governor Wanga said. The county boss noted that upcoming players can only be exposed to the outside world if they get the necessary support from the government. She said she will mobilize more resources towards helping youths in the country develop their sporting ability. The Governor made the remarks when she hosted a luncheon for players from the county who won the 8th edition of the Kenya Youth Intercounty Sports Association Tournament (KYISAT) held in Tharaka Nithi County. Homa Bay defeated Migori County 3-0 on penalties in football after a draw in regular and extra time. The tightly contested Lakers Derby marked Homa Bay’s first appearance in the county games which they won. Ms. Wanga asked the players to focus on putting the county on the forefront in other games. ‘We know you played under difficult circumstances. We are also proud of our women’s team which did not get the trophy but we hope they will make us proud next time,’ Ms. Wanga said. Arujo Ward Member of County Assembly Tonny Otieno and his Kochia counterpart Ojala Nyangi who were among leaders who welcomed the county team assured Governor Wanga that they will support initiatives to increase budgetary allocation to sports. MCAs are expected to boost the budgetary allocation for sports during the budget for 2023-2024 financial year.
