Wanaheda NaTIS Centre Construction Begins

Windhoek: The construction of a new Namibia Traffic Information System (NaTIS) One-Stop Centre officially commenced in Windhoek on Wednesday. The one-stop centre is situated in Wanaheda and will improve access to NaTIS services for residents in Katutura and surrounding areas. According to Namibia Press Agency, Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi, speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony, said the project forms part of the government's commitment to improve service delivery and bring essential services closer to communities. "It is with immense pride and a profound sense of purpose that I stand before you today at this ground-breaking ceremony to commence the actual construction of the Wanaheda NaTIS Centre," he stated. The minister noted that the decision to construct the facility followed a visit he made to the existing NaTIS centre in the Northern Industrial Area in April 2025, where he observed congestion and long waiting times experienced by members of the public. He highlighted that many residents from Katutura and surrounding areas travel long distances to access services at the current facility, which has become overwhelmed by demand. "Our people should not have to travel great distances and compete with heavy industrial traffic to access NaTIS services," Nekundi said. The Wanaheda centre will provide learner licence testing, driver testing, roadworthy testing for both light and heavy vehicles, and permit services. The facility will also incorporate an Intelligent Driver Testing System aimed at improving transparency, fairness, and efficiency in the testing process. Construction of the facility has been awarded to August 26 Construction and will be implemented in partnership with five small and medium enterprise contractors. Nekundi mentioned that the project is expected to create about 200 employment opportunities during the construction phase. The minister also revealed plans to upgrade NaTIS facilities in other towns including Walvis Bay, Oranjemund, Oshakati, Nkurenkuru, and Marient al as part of a broader programme to modernise the system and improve public service delivery nationwide.
