WAFCON’2026 Qualifiers: Angola Triumphs Over Zimbabwe

Luanda: The national women’s football team of Angola defeated Zimbabwe 2-1 on Thursday at the 22 de Junho stadium, marking the first leg of the qualifiers for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON’2026) to be held in Morocco.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Angola, playing on home turf, took an early lead with a goal from Ary in the very first minute of the match. Zimbabwe managed to equalize with a goal from Ruvimbo at the 16th minute. Ary secured the victory for Angola by scoring a second goal at the 74th minute.

This victory gives the Welw­tschia, the nickname for the Angola women’s team, an advantage as they head into the second leg of the match scheduled for next Wednesday in Pretoria, South Africa, serving as Zimbabwe’s alternative ground.

Angola aims to secure their third participation in the WAFCON tournament, having previously competed in 1995 and 2022 in Nigeria.
