Von Der Leyen and Chinese Premier Discuss Future of EU-China Trade Cooperation

Brussels: European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen has held a phone conversation with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, with bilateral trade cooperation being on the agenda, the commission said on Tuesday.



According to Namibia Press Agency, the phone call focused on the state of EU-China relations as 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties. The two leaders engaged in a discussion to review bilateral and global issues.



Von Der Leyen highlighted China’s role in addressing possible trade diversion caused by tariffs, particularly in sectors impacted by global overcapacity. The leaders explored the establishment of a mechanism to track potential trade diversion and ensure any developments are addressed appropriately.



The conversation also touched on the urgency for structural solutions to rebalance the bilateral trade relationship. Von Der Leyen emphasized the need for better access for European businesses, products, and services to the Chinese market.
