“Volunteers” Sequel Tops China’s Box Office During National Day Celebrations

BEIJING—Chen Kaige's latest war epic, "The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death," continued to dominate China's box office, leading the National Day holiday rankings for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the film, which stars Zhu Yilong, Xin Baiqing, and Zhang Zifeng, has amassed over 600 million yuan (approximately 85.6 million U.S. dollars), representing 36.7 percent of the total box office revenue this holiday. Maoyan, a movie data platform, projects that the film could end its theatrical run surpassing 1.4 billion yuan, potentially ranking it among the top six highest-grossing films in China for the year.

"The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death" is the second installment in Chen's "The Volunteers" trilogy. Its predecessor also experienced significant box office success, earning 868 million yuan during last year's National Day holiday.

This year's National Day holiday began on October 1 and features eight new domestic releases, albeit two films have recently withdrawn from the lineup. This week-long holiday is crucial for the film industry, viewed as an opportunity for a significant rebound following a lackluster summer season. Other notable performers include Lu Chuan’s sci-fi film "Bureau 749" and the crime drama "Tiger Wolf Rabbit," which have garnered over 330 million yuan and 282 million yuan, respectively.
