Vihiga: Muslims across Vihiga County gathered at various locations to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha through special prayers, animal sacrifices, and acts of charity. The day, known as the Islamic festival of sacrifice, saw religious leaders, Muslims, and political figures calling for unity, peace, and support for the needy.
According to Kenya News Agency, a Muslim resident from the Mbale region, Abdulzarak Khamisi, highlighted that Eid-Ul-Adha is a celebration centered on animal sacrifice, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son. He explained that the practice, known as Qurbani or Udhiya, serves as a way of giving thanks to Allah and is not obligatory for those unable to afford it. In preparation for the festival, people observe the first nine days leading up to Eid, purchasing livestock and conducting the sacrifices only after the Eid prayers.
Khamisi emphasized that the celebration is inclusive, allowing participation from non-Muslims in the community. He stressed the importance of sharing meat, as it enables everyone, particularly the needy, to partake in the celebrations. He described the key values of Eid as sharing, love, fear of Allah, and giving to those in need, urging able Muslims to extend their generosity.
Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo extended his wishes for a happy Eid, stating: "To all Muslims across our great county, I join you in celebrating this holy day of Eid-Ul-Adha. Today reminds us of the strength of faith, the beauty of sacrifice, and the power of unity." He encouraged the community to gather with loved ones, share meals, and inspire others through acts of kindness.
Luanda MP Dick Maungu also conveyed his wishes for a peaceful and prosperous Eid-Ul-Adha, emphasizing the importance of faith, unity, compassion, and service to humanity. He expressed hope for Allah's blessings, forgiveness, and peace for all.
The celebrations in Vihiga County, including prayers held at Idavaga Muslim School in Mbale, were part of a global observance as millions of Muslims worldwide marked the Islamic festival of sacrifice.
