Vihiga county: Vihiga County on Monday joined the global community in marking World AIDS Day, with the county’s Department of Health Services leading the commemorations at the Sabatia Sub-County Hospital Grounds.
According to Kenya News Agency, residents, health workers and partner organizations participated in a procession from Mudete to the hospital, where they honoured those who have succumbed to HIV/AIDS and reflected on progress made in managing the disease. The event featured wellness exercises, entertainment, a panel discussion, speeches and free HIV testing and counselling services.
This year’s theme, centred on ending AIDS among adolescents and young people, is of particular significance to Vihiga. County health data reveals that 19,659 people are living with HIV, including 1,051 children aged 0-14. In 2024, the county recorded 265 new infections, with adolescents accounting for 71 cases. The HIV prevalence rate stands at 3.6 percent-2.4 percent among males and 4.7 percent among females.
Speaking during the commemoration, County Executive Committee Member for Health Dr. Nicholas Kitungulu said the theme directly speaks to the challenges facing young people in the region. He urged adolescents and young adults to get tested, understand their HIV status and make informed decisions to protect their wellbeing. ‘Adolescents and young adults continue to contribute significantly to new HIV infections in Vihiga. Addressing this requires a comprehensive and compassionate response,’ he said.
The event brought together various partner organizations, among them Vihiga Women in Business, Rural Outreach Africa, Utu Bora CBO, Kenya Red Cross, Impact Research and Development Organization (IRDO), Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), Nuru ya Mtoto, Tiko, the Judiciary, NACADA and the National Syndemic Disease Control Council.
The County Government reiterated its commitment to strengthening HIV prevention, care and support services, and ensuring that no adolescent or young person is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
