Vihiga: County Commissioner Felix Watakila has emphasized the crucial role of women in peacebuilding and security initiatives in society. Speaking at a training workshop for women peace champions from Bungoma and Vihiga counties, Watakila highlighted the impact of disruptions in peace and security on women, advocating for their active participation in violence prevention efforts.
According to Kenya News Agency, sexual offences such as rape, incest, and defilement are rampant in the area. He stressed the seriousness of these offences and urged the community to adhere to moral codes for harmonious co-existence. The County Director of Gender, Dorothy Murakwa, encouraged the workshop participants to oppose any gender-biased decisions or actions.
Murakwa announced the upcoming launch of the County Action Plan, detailing activities to enhance women’s contributions to peace and security. This plan, sponsored by UN Women, aims to establish ‘County Women for Peace chapters’ across all 47 devolved units in Kenya.
Mercy Ogwel, the Western Regional Manager of the National Council of Churches of Kenya, outlined the training’s focus areas, including Alternative Justice Systems, the importance of women’s voices in peace deliberations, and preparation for leadership roles in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
