Addis Ababa: The victory of Adwa is not just a victory of a moment, but an unbreakable historical cord that determined the past, revealed the present, and shapes the future, President Taye Atske Selassie noted today. Speaking at the commemoration of the 129th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa, the president added that the victory is a symbol of freedom for Africa and all Black people.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the victory of Adwa has heralded hope, restored the human dignity that colonialists tried to destroy, and showcased the national heroism of Ethiopians, particularly revealing the strong participation and political acumen of women. President Taye stressed that the idea and philosophy of Ethiopianism always stand out as we celebrate the Victory of Adwa.

When we celebrate Adwa, it is fitting to thoroughly examine the idea that was the source and foundation of the victory, he stated. When we commemorate the battle, the question of what was the secret to Ethiopians defeating a nation considered powerful in its time is an undeniable question of the era.

For him, Adwa is the starting point of a diligent intellectual force and discourse while the battle, and historical background are preserved. As our African brothers who fiercely fought against the apartheid regime, clothed in the spirit of Adwa, told us, Adwa has become a source of an inspiring and intelligent discourse. It is not just a military triumph, but also a product of ideas, the president pointed out.

‘This very debate of ideas and knowledge, the discourse, its interpretation in our current era, suggests that Adwa is not just a victory of a moment, but a historical cord or an unbreakable strong chain that determined the past, revealed the present, and will shape the future.’

Among the reasons why Adwa has determined the past is that even amidst the challenge Ethiopia had in governance system because those who don’t had the system of government in Africa and in the Arabians, Latin America and in the United States were kneeled down. According to him, the other factor is that Ethiopians have the idea and value of judging black and white races as equal creatures. These are the foundations that gave us the courage to win in unity, he underscored.

Additionally, President Taye stressed that unity, military wisdom, and forgiveness are the other basic values of Ethiopians revealed during the Battle of Adwa and are still in place. He further said that the unity and victory of Ethiopians have rekindled the light for those people deprived of freedom and justice in Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States, and South America.
