Venezuela US Events Offer Crucial Lessons for Global South Youth: Katire

Windhoek: The recent events involving Venezuela and the United States offer significant lessons for the youth in the Global South concerning governance, sovereignty, and the effects of institutional failure, according to the Student Union of Namibia (SUN). According to Namibia Press Agency, Intelligent Katire, the Legal Secretary of SUN, highlighted in an interview the implications of the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the US military. He emphasized the importance of responsible exercise of democracy and sovereignty, stating, "Democracy cannot be imposed from outside, just as sovereignty cannot be used to excuse mismanagement." Katire pointed out that the crisis in Venezuela illustrates how national instability can arise when weak governance meets external pressure. He noted that treating natural resources as political shortcuts and prioritizing personalities over strong institutions contribute to such instability. The collapse of systems meant to protect and empower led mill ions of Venezuelan youths to flee not due to a lack of courage but because of these systemic failures. He urged young people to reject narratives that justify poor governance under nationalism and foreign interventions disguised as democratic support. Katire warned against two dangerous extremes facing developing nations: misrule in the name of sovereignty and foreign intervention in the name of democracy. He emphasized that sustainable development relies on accountable leadership and functional institutions. Katire called for a shift in political culture among young leaders across the Global South. He stressed the importance of prioritizing institutions over personalities and accountability over loyalty. Additionally, he advocated for economic diversification to prevent economies from becoming fragile and exposing youth to recurring crises. On the topic of youth empowerment, Katire highlighted the need to treat employment as a national priority rather than a political slogan. He asserted that it should be central to national development strategies to ensure social and political stability. Despite the challenges, Katire expressed confidence in youth-led change, stating, "The future of the Global South will not be decided by ideology or external pressure but will be secured by disciplined leadership and conscious youth politics. This is our responsibility, and this is our opportunity."
