WINDHOEK: McHenry Venaani, president of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), has vowed to lead Namibia into a future characterized by equality and free from corruption and economic disparity. At a rally on Saturday, Venaani outlined his party’s vision for a nation where citizens trust their government to act in their best interests.
According to Namibia News Agency, Venaani criticized the current administration under Swapo, claiming that corruption has become commonplace. “Every day, another scandal, another misuse of funds, another betrayal of the trust of the Namibian people is reported,” he asserted. Venaani called on voters to support PDM, urging them not to be swayed by smaller political entities that he believes do not truly represent Namibian interests. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming 2024 elections, likening their significance to the pivotal elections of 1989.
Venaani announced plans for a protest march in Windhoek on Tuesday, following the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s (ECN) deci
sion to award a $60 million tender to South African company Ren-Form for the design and printing of ballot papers. He alleged that Ren-Form is involved in a corruption scandal involving millions of Rands and called on Namibians to oppose what he described as an attempt to undermine the democratic process.
PDM has instructed its legal team to demand the tender be revoked, with Venaani stating the party’s readiness to take the issue to the High Court of Namibia if necessary. “We will fight to uphold the principles of free, fair, and transparent elections until the very end,” he declared.
