USAID Pledges $80 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Ethiopia


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States has announced a substantial increase in its humanitarian aid to Ethiopia, with an additional commitment of more than $80 million. This funding, revealed by Sonali Korde, the Assistant to the Administrator for the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance at USAID, aims to support the Ethiopian population affected by various crises.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, As detailed in a press release from the US Embassy in Ethiopia, the assistance will target urgent humanitarian needs arising from ongoing conflicts, environmental challenges, and security issues. The new funding allocation will bolster efforts by USAID’s humanitarian partners, including UN agencies and NGOs, to deliver critical support in areas like agriculture, nutrition, and gender-based violence prevention. Specifically, the initiative aims to address acute malnutrition among over 1.5 million children under five and more than 600,000 pregnant and nursing mothers within the year.



This pledge is part of the USAID’s continued commitment in Fiscal Year 2023 to support vital sectors, reaching approximately 4.5 million individuals in eight Ethiopian regions. The United States, as Ethiopia’s largest bilateral humanitarian donor, underscores its dedication to providing essential aid and urges other nations and entities to contribute to the humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia.
