Chesumei Sub-County — Research conducted by medical and agricultural students at the University of East Africa Baraton has yielded significant benefits to the local community, particularly in health care and farming, local leaders assert.
According to Kenya News Agency, Chemundu-Kapngetuny Ward Member of the County Assembly, the university’s nursing students have been providing free prenatal and postnatal care services to expectant mothers in the Chesumei Sub-County. In addition, the university has provided essential primary health care services, including the distribution of mosquito nets.
Keter urged the university to extend its community services by constructing a modern hospital for more advanced medical care. He also stated that the community has been supportive of the university’s initiatives that offer direct or indirect benefits to locals. In agriculture, Keter mentioned that research projects have enabled local farmers to acquire new skills and resources, thereby improving their farming practices.
The MCA emphasized the need for the university to focus on technical and practical skills that align with the new competency-based curriculum to prepare graduates for the job market. Keter also noted that the establishment of the university has stimulated economic growth in the area, including the development of real estate and other commercial enterprises. He cited the creation of jobs either directly through the university or through new businesses that have emerged in proximity to the institution.
According to Keter, small businesses within the university community, particularly those related to dairy farming, have experienced significant growth. The University of East Africa Baraton remains the only established mission university offering various courses in Nandi County.
