Universities Championship: African Unity Triumphs Over ESMi with a 1-0 Victory

Ouagadougou: The University of African Unity (AU), previously known as IAM, commenced the 3rd edition of the University Championship (CDU) with a narrow 1-0 victory against the Higher School of Microfinance (ESMi). The opening match took place in Ouagadougou, marking the beginning of the competition, as observed by AIB.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the reigning champions, UA, demonstrated their determination to retain the trophy this year by scoring early in the match. Their captain, Bertrand Bagnoa, last year’s Ballon d’Or recipient, secured the victory with a swift goal. Despite efforts from ESMi to retaliate, UA maintained their lead, clinching the first win of the tournament.



The competition’s growth over the years has been notable, says its promoter, Cheick Oumar Ilboudo. He highlighted the increase from 19 to 28 participating universities, reflecting the academic community’s enthusiasm and the platform it provides for talent to shine. Ilboudo expressed satisfaction in sustaining the championship for three years, emphasizing the resilience and determination it represents amid challenges.



Ma®tre Gloria Guissou Kabr©, the patron of this year’s CDU, expressed her support for the initiative, aligning with her involvement in sports. She emphasized the importance of providing platforms for skill development, as sport and education are interconnected. Kabr© noted that the competition fosters student emulation and opens new opportunities, encouraging participants to network and prepare for future professional endeavors.



The event also focused on road safety awareness, with Police Lieutenant Issouf Traor© from the General Directorate of the National Police advocating for helmet use among students. This year’s innovation includes a panel discussion on sports economics and career opportunities, promoting diverse roles in the sports ecosystem of Burkina Faso.



The Ministry of Sports, represented by Abdoul Razack Zida, officially launched the 3rd University Championship, praising the students for their organizational efforts and highlighting the unity it fosters. The final match is slated for June 8.
