The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 June the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, by a Resolution adopted at the session of 20 June 2022.

The Resolution was co-sponsored by almost all UN Member States (191 out of 193), including Greece, and recognizes that the active participation of women, on equal terms with men, at all levels of decision-making is essential to the achievement of substantive gender equality, sustainable development, peace and democracy.

Furthermore, it invites all UN Member States to observe the International Day of Women in Diplomacy (24 June) annually, including through public awareness-raising activities, in order to promote gender-balanced participation at all levels of diplomacy.

Greece attaches high priority to gender equality and continues to undertake and actively support initiatives to further promote it, both domestically and internationally.

It is noted that 37% of Greece’s diplomatic staff is now comprised of women. In fact, women diplomats hold 49% of senior management positions at the Headquarters, while 42% of women diplomats hold positions of middle level management.

Lastly, it should be noted that 32% of the heads and 33% of the middle-ranking officials in the Diplomatic Missions and Consular Authorities of Greece abroad are women diplomats.
