Luanda: The secretary of the largest opposition party UNITA in central Huila province, Augusto Samuel, said Thursday that the decision by President Joo Louren§o to award recognition medals to the signatories of the Alvor Agreement, as part of the 50th anniversary of national independence, was ‘a sign of maturity.’ The politician, who was speaking at the opening of the provincial conference in preparation for UNITA’s 14th Ordinary Congress, emphasized that this gesture signals political maturity and respect for Angola’s history, acknowledging the contributions of Agostinho Neto, Holden Roberto, and Jonas Savimbi in the national liberation struggle.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the presidential decision marks ‘an important step’ towards consolidating national reconciliation and strengthening unity among Angolans. Samuel highlighted that, regardless of ideological and political differences, it is crucial to recognize the contributions of all who fought for independence and the establishment of the Angolan nation.
The politician emphasized that honoring national heroes, including UNITA’s founding leader, showcases recognition and respect for the founding values of Angola. He noted that Huila province is actively preparing for UNITA’s 14th Ordinary Congress, scheduled for November 28 to 30 in Luanda, under the theme ‘United for Change, Stability, and Development.’
Augusto Samuel outlined that the upcoming meeting will review the activities conducted during the term following the 13th Congress, evaluate the country’s political, economic, and social landscape, and discuss key topics for the national congress. He stressed that the current period is crucial, with less than two years until the next general elections, urging government officials to take greater responsibility in developing public policies aimed at improving citizens’ living conditions.
He encouraged the government to continue enhancing healthcare infrastructure, including the rehabilitation and expansion of the Lubango Central Hospital and the improvement of services in the municipal hospitals of Caluquembe and Gambos, viewing these as significant achievements for better medical care in the province.
The preparatory conference involves delegates from Huila’s 23 municipalities, aiming to elect 49 delegates for the national convention, alongside seven permanent candidates and two alternates for the Party’s Political Commission.
