Speaking at today’s historic meeting of the United Nations Security Council, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing, highlighted the significant progress achieved during her recent visit to Somalia, describing it as the most encouraging trip in the past twelve years. She emphasized the country’s remarkable advancements in governance and security.
The Special Representative began her address by acknowledging Somalia’s efforts in achieving tangible improvements in important national issues, including the establishment of the Constitutional Review Committee, progress in the formation of 11 new laws, and the successful conduct of inclusive and transparent elections in Puntland.
However, she also emphasized that Somalia still faces critical challenges, primarily relating to humanitarian crises, climate change, and economic support. She highlighted the urgent need to provide assistance to the 8.25 million Somalis who are in dire need of humanitarian aid due to prevailing drought and conflict.
Ambassador Laing expressed her gratitude to the international community for their continuous support in Somalia’s state-building processes and urged them to sustain their commitment to the country’s progress. She stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of conflicts, investing in development projects, and supporting the government’s efforts in ensuring stability and peace.
The Special Representative’s speech underscored the significant steps taken by Somalia in various areas, while also drawing attention to the ongoing challenges that require continued international support. The United Nations and its partners are encouraged to redouble their efforts to help Somalia overcome these challenges and achieve lasting peace, security, and prosperity for its people.
