Luanda: The acting United Nations Coordinator in Angola, Diogo Zorrilla, praised the role that the country has played in promoting peace and regional stability, as well as its commitment to multilateralism and the values of the United Nations.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Angolan President Joo Louren§o has been an active voice in defending peace, international cooperation, and dialogue between nations, contributing to strengthening stability on the African continent.
Speaking at a roundtable entitled “Is the UN indispensable? Multilateralism, retrospective and way forward,” promoted by the ‘VenSncio de Moura’ Diplomatic Academy, Diogo Zorrilla defended the need to renew the global commitment to the founding principles of the UN, at a time when the world is going through an era of ‘profound disruption and unprecedented challenges.’
The diplomat, who spoke about the organization’s role in the global situation, stressed that over eight decades the UN has played a decisive role in promoting peace, security, and global development, but warned that “the pillars of peace and progress are crumbling under the weight of impunity, inequality, and indifference.”
“We are living in an era of incalculable human suffering. We need to decide what kind of world we want to build, a world of brute force or a world of reason, a world of self-interest or collective purpose,” he said.
The diplomat emphasized the importance of putting technology at the service of humanity, with special attention to artificial intelligence, which is redefining human existence in real time, as one of the top priorities among the five choices identified by the UN Secretary-General important for the future of the organization.
Zorrilla noted that despite financial constraints, the United Nations continues to play an essential role in conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance.
He praised the recent initiative of the General Assembly, which established an international framework for the ethical use of AI, with a view to promoting national autonomy and global responsibility.
The event brought together ambassadors, diplomats, and students at the VenSncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy to discuss the role of the UN.
