UN Office in Somalia Lauds Country’s Membership in East African Community

Mogadishu, Somalia – The United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM) has extended its congratulations to the government and people of Somalia on the nation’s recent admission as a member of the East African Community (EAC). In a statement, UNSOM hailed this as a significant victory for Somalia, marking its reintegration into the international community and the restoration of its dignity.

According to Somali National News Agency, As the eighth member state, Somalia joins Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda in the regional intergovernmental organization. The EAC, established in 1967, aims to foster a common market, a shared currency, and a political federation among its member states. After disbanding in 1977, the EAC was re-established in 2000 and currently encompasses a population of 312 million with a combined GDP of US$923.532 billion.

Somalia’s journey to EAC membership began with its application in 2016, culminating in its full membership on November 23, 2023, after meeting the required criteria and procedures. The country’s entry into the EAC is anticipated to enhance regional trade, investment, cooperation, peace, and security.
