UN Human Rights Commission and Sierra Leone Parliament Strengthen Collaborative Efforts for Human Rights Capacity Building

Freetown: United Nations Human Rights Commission West Africa delegation, led by Regional Representative Ayeda Robert Kotchani, paid a courtesy call on Wednesday, 10th June 2026, on Rt. Honourable Speaker, Sixth Parliament Second Republic, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, at the Parliament Office in Freetown. The delegation expressed a strong interest in collaborating with the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee. According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Kotchani reassured Speaker Thomas of the OHCHR's commitment to supporting capacity building within the Parliament and providing essential human rights documentation. Kotchani commended the Parliament for its efforts in addressing human rights issues. Speaker Thomas, in turn, outlined Parliament's primary responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of addressing sensitive human rights issues through lawmaking under his supervision. He referenced various Acts, protocols, and agreements, asserting that his legal background has made the Parliament particularly sensiti ve to human rights considerations. Speaker Thomas disclosed plans to review the National Human Rights Commission Act to enhance its responsiveness. He mentioned that Parliamentary Committees are actively intervening in human rights conflicts, facilitating amicable resolutions. He called for increased capacity building for Members of Parliament and described human rights as cross-cutting issues, emphasizing the need for quick settlement of critical matters through proper channels. Kotchani pledged to provide technical support to the Parliament Human Rights Committee and shared relevant human rights documents. He also appealed for Speaker Thomas's support in extending a standing invitation through the Sierra Leone Permanent UN Representative in Geneva for UN Human Rights Special Procedure Mandate Holders to visit the country. Additionally, he commended the recent ratification of the Death Penalty Abolition Protocol by the Speaker. The delegation praised the Sierra Leone National Human Rights Commission for h olding an 'A' Status and urged the Speaker to support adequate budgetary allocations for the Commission. UPR Regional Advisor West Africa, WARO, OHCHR, Mrs. Kane Yaye BA, attended the meeting and appealed for the implementation of UPR recommendations through engagement with Members of Parliament, capacity building, and oversight.
