UN Global Compact Attracts 65 Angolan Companies to Sustainability Initiative

Luanda: At least 65 companies from various sectors and sizes in Angola have formalized their adherence to the United Nations Global Compact, with a view to implementing sustainability and social responsibility practices. This information was provided to the press on Monday in Luanda by the executive director of the UN Global Compact in Angola, Eliana dos Santos, on the sidelines of the official launch of the network in the country.

According to Angola Press News Agency, the network includes 65 companies committed to the United Nations Global Compact, from large corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Eliana dos Santos clarified that although the official launch is taking place now, the fieldwork began four years ago, initially focusing on the Angolan financial sector due to its greater propensity and experience in international markets.

In the context of commitment and transparency, Eliana dos Santos explained that adherence to the 'Compact' requires a commitment at the highest level of organizations, namely from boards of directors or general management. She emphasized that participating companies should be guided by the ten fundamental principles of the Global Compact, which cover areas such as human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.

"The pact helps companies through a roadmap to do business more responsibly, where institutions are encouraged to report their progress annually through a specific platform (COP), demonstrating their sustainability journey in a transparent way," she stressed.

For the executive director, the central objective is for companies to operate with greater social and environmental responsibility, carefully examining their supply chain and aligning themselves with international standards. "The aim is for companies to create a better world, do business responsibly, and for social responsibility to have a real impact," the executive concluded.

The Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, promoting the alignment of business strategies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
