UN General Assembly President Advocates for Female Leadership at the Helm

Luanda: The president of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, has called for the election of a woman as UN Secretary-General. The German diplomat highlighted the concerning fact that in the organization's 80-year history, no woman has held its top leadership position.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Annalena Baerbock posed a poignant question: "Why, among four billion potential candidates, has it never been possible to find a single woman to fill this position?" She emphasized that while the decision lies with the member states, the issue extends beyond equal representation, touching upon the organization's credibility.

In her address, Annalena Baerbock also criticized the enduring issues of extreme poverty and fundamental rights violations. She pointed out that hundreds of millions of people remain trapped in poverty, facing crises, and deprived of their basic rights. She described this ongoing situation as "not only a moral failure, but also a recipe for global instability, terrorism, and a tragic waste of humanity's greatest resource: people."

Baerbock further clarified that the responsibility for these global challenges does not rest with the United Nations Charter or the institution itself but with the willingness of member states to adhere to the organization's principles and hold violators accountable.
