UN agency reiterates support for Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA— The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) declared that it will prolong, increase and diversify the actions carried out to support the comprehensive sustainable growth of Ethiopia.

The resident representative of the UNDP in Ethiopia, Turhan Saleh, said that the specialized advice, the exchange of knowledge and experiences, which includes economic institutions, governance and social organizations, will continue.

“We are with Ethiopia until the end,” he said in an interview with the Ethiopian News Agency, before reiterating that the agency will extend “contribution of knowledge, expertise and practices, all with very positive global results.”

“We are investing directly in the generation of employment through micro, small and medium-sized companies. We will continue to help so that future generations can benefit and economy may boost,” he said.

Saleh stressed that the immediate steps are aimed at favoring the construction of peace in Ethiopia.

“We will also help to rehabilitate the areas affected by the confrontation between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.”

According to his opinion, “the peace agreement signed in Pretoria, South Africa (last November 2), is an opportunity for Ethiopia to turn its face towards development”, because “without security and stability it is impossible to prosper.”

As he pointed out, the national dialogue is something significant for the Program and also for the United Nations, because it is very important to address structural and political problems, among others.

“We received the government’s request to support the development of the national dialogue and we have already projected a strategy to do so,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the peace agreement between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) contributes to the recovery of tourism sector in Ethiopia.

After the recent arrangement, the number of travelers from overseas and members of the diaspora entering the country for business or leisure has increased, Tourism Ministry said.

Peace and stability are keys for visitors who wish and are able to come to develop cultural, religious, gastronomic and sports activities, among others, and therefore the pact opened a new chapter in the country, according to the ministerial communication.

The tourism sector was one of the most affected by the conflict in the north with the TPLF,in combination with the great impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the statement, which does not disclose demonstrative recovery figures, since the end of hostilities, there is a favorable environment to receive citizens of all nations and also promote national tourism.

It also states that “to attract more tourists for the upcoming Christmas and baptismal holidays, the promotion of tourist destinations has already begun, and we hope that many will arrive during both festivities.”

“We are working to make tourism a key part of the economy, with the correctness of policies and legal frameworks,” the ministerial communication explains, and urges the diaspora to “expose the true current situation of Ethiopia to further strengthen tourism sector.”
