Nyandarua County, Kenya – In Nyandarua County, the Umoja Mbuyu dam’s walls collapsed due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the destruction of crops of unknown value. The incident occurred in the Umoja Mbuyu location, a division in Nyandarua North.
According to Kenya News Agency, Nyandarua North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Anjerine Were confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred at around 6 AM on Wednesday. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the water had already started flowing into a nearby stream before the dam’s walls fully broke. Were elaborated that the collapse of the dam’s wall caused the water to flow downstream, destroying crops, including onions and potatoes, in the Pesi area.
A team of area chiefs and assistant chiefs has been dispatched to assess the extent of the damage, and a comprehensive report is expected following a baraza (public meeting) with the residents. Umoja Mbuyu division, where the incident took place, borders Laikipia County to the south.
The DCC, accompanied by the sub-county police commander (SCPC) and the critical infrastructure protection unit commander (CIPU), visited the scene. Other officials from the county and national government also visited the area and advised residents to avoid crossing overflowing rivers.
In a related development in Nyakio division, Kinangop area, Nyandarua County, the Haraka shopping center experienced flooding due to a heavy downpour on Tuesday night. No accidents or damages were reported, and residents have been advised to exercise caution. Efforts are underway, with the area MCA contacted to provide an excavator to assist in unblocking the trenches and redirecting the water.
