According to Angola Press News Agency, the Provincial Environment Office organized the first methodological meeting to disseminate the National Plan for the Progressive Elimination of Single-Use Plastics (PLANEPP). This event was part of activities marking World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th. Teresa Caridade Mazuela, director of the Provincial Environment Office, highlighted that this UN-established day encourages public reflection on environmental care.
Mazuela stated that the event aimed to share the guidelines and goals of the National Plan for eliminating single-use plastics. It also sought to raise awareness of the negative impact of plastics on ecosystems, health, and the economy. She emphasized the need for continued environmental education and ecological awareness among economic agents and consumers, noting that behavioral change is crucial for implementing environmental policies.
Speaker Afonso Teca discussed "Environmental Impacts of Plastics," highlighting health problems like respiratory diseases caused by improper plastic disposal. He pointed out the loss of marine biodiversity as a significant consequence of excessive plastic use, which also affects soil quality. Teca advocated for adopting sustainable practices, such as using cloth and biodegradable bags, to reduce plastic bag usage in the region.
World Environment Day celebrations are happening nationwide under the theme "Climate action, inspired by nature, the climate, and our future." The event in Uge saw participation from government representatives, municipal environmental directors, business agents, students, and law enforcement representatives, among others.
