OUAHIGOYA – The Health Science Training and Research Unit (UFR/SS) triumphed in the 3rd edition of the President’s Cup at Lédéa Bernard Ouédraogo University (formerly University of Ouahigouya) on Saturday, June 8. The UFR/SS team won the soccer tournament by defeating their opponents from the Human Resources Management and Land and Real Estate Management unit (GRH/GFI) during a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event marked the culmination of the 72-hour long “Sports and Cultural Days,” which aimed to foster resilience and success through sports. The festivities brought together faculty, staff, and students in a series of sporting and cultural activities, enhancing community spirit within the university. The competition concluded with UFR/SS outscoring GRH/GFI 4-1 in penalties after a tense 60-minute match that ended 0-0.
As champions, the UFR/SS team was awarded a trophy and a prize of 75,000 CFA francs, presented by University President Professor Adama Ouéda, who expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success and the spirit of camaraderie it promoted. The runners-up received 50,000 CFA francs. Professor Ouéda praised all participating teams for their efforts and the spirit of fair play they displayed throughout the tournament.
Captain of the winning team, Cheik Aziz Sankara, noted the significance of their victory, stating it was the first time the medical faculty had won the cup. “Our opponents were formidable, but in football, there must be a winner, and we were fortunate to prevail,” Sankara remarked. He also thanked President Ouéda and his team for their dedication to the students.
Harouna Ouédraogo, President of the Organizing Committee, reflected on the event’s success in achieving its primary goal of strengthening social bonds through sports and cultural activities, highlighting the high level of participation as a measure of this success.
The university has announced that the next edition of the President’s Cup is scheduled for 2025, promising another opportunity for student engagement and community building.
