Ouagadougou: The AS Police junior women's team won the first edition of the under-20 women's football tournament on March 8, beating the ABPSF team by a narrow score of 1-0 on the ENAM field. According to Burkina Information Agency, this victory marked a successful debut for promoter Yasmine Ouedraogo. The tournament featured exciting football during two 30-minute halves, with AS Police, led by coach Charlotte Millogo, securing the win thanks to a first-half goal from Aïssatou Zampaligre in the 20th minute. Despite a spirited effort from Martin Zinona's ABPSF team in the second half, they were unable to breach AS Police's solid defense. The young officers maintained control, earning first place and winning the trophy, a gold medal, and 250,000 FCFA. The runners-up, ABPSF, received 150,000 FCFA and a silver medal, while USO, finishing third, took home a bronze medal and 100,000 FCFA. AS Police coach Charlotte Millogo expressed her satisfaction, emphasizing the team's belief and determination. She noted that while the first half posed little threat from the opposition, the second half saw ABPSF press harder. However, AS Police's resilience secured the victory. Promoter Yasmine Ouedraogo highlighted the tournament's role in honoring the resilient women of Burkina Faso, amidst initial skepticism about the event's viability. She emphasized the challenges faced by women in sports leadership and celebrated the successful execution of the tournament, which provided opportunities for the participants. The tournament's organizers aim to help clubs discover new talent and provide a platform for the national coach to strengthen his squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next summer. The competition, which ran from March 1st to 8th, brought together 12 teams, and the organizers expressed their satisfaction with its success and hope for even better outcomes in future editions.
