U.S. Sanctions Against Brazilian Judge Criticized by President Lula

Braslia: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has strongly condemned the United States’ decision to impose visa restrictions on Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, calling the move “unacceptable.” Lula expressed his disapproval at a press conference, criticizing any foreign leader’s attempt to comment on the rulings of another country’s Supreme Court.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently announced new visa restrictions targeting foreign officials accused of censoring American citizens or companies. This policy is widely perceived to be aimed at Justice Moraes, who temporarily suspended the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in 2024 for not complying with Brazilian legislation.

President Lula has vowed to defend Justice Moraes and any other Supreme Court justices who may face similar sanctions. Moraes is currently presiding over the case against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of orchestrating an attempted coup on January 8, 2023. Eduardo Bolsonaro, a federal deputy and the former president’s son, has been actively advocating for U.S. sanctions against Moraes while residing in the United States.

Lula expressed his dismay at Eduardo’s actions, labeling them as serious and unpatriotic. He described the call for U.S. involvement in Brazilian judicial matters as “a terrorist act.” Eduardo Bolsonaro is currently under investigation in Brazil for obstructing justice and attempting to influence officials by seeking foreign intervention against Justice Moraes.
