Typhoon Yagi Devastates Northern Vietnam, Leaving 146 Dead or Missing

Hanoi – The aftermath of Super Typhoon Yagi has resulted in at least 82 fatalities and 64 individuals reported missing in Vietnam’s northern provinces, following severe floods and landslides triggered by the storm as reported on Tuesday early afternoon.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development provided a breakdown of the impact, noting that the mountainous province of Cao Bang was hit hardest, with 19 deaths and 36 individuals missing. Other provinces have also reported significant casualties, including 19 in Lao Cai, 22 in Yen Bai, and nine in Quang Ninh.

The Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control within the ministry highlighted the extensive damage caused by Typhoon Yagi, including powerful winds that destroyed 48,337 houses, predominantly in the coastal areas of Quang Ninh and the city of Hai Phong. Additional fatalities were reported in the capital Hanoi, Hai Phong city, and provinces such as Hoa Binh, Hai Duong, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, and Lai Chau.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued warnings for continued rising water levels in the region’s rivers on Tuesday and Wednesday, with several reaching the highest alert level. This development suggests that the situation may worsen before it improves, as communities brace for more potential flooding and disruptions.
