Manila—The aftermath of Typhoon Krathon has resulted in at least five deaths, with one individual still unaccounted for, as the typhoon battered the northern Philippines over the weekend, a national disaster response agency confirmed on Friday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported the deaths occurred in the northernmost regions of the Philippines, areas directly in the path of Typhoon Krathon. The fatalities include a 62-year-old male who drowned in Ilocos Norte and a 25-year-old who was electrocuted in Cagayan Valley. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of death for three other victims. Efforts to locate a person reported swept away by a strong current are still underway.
The NDRRMC also noted that Krathon impacted approximately 243,000 residents across at least 828 villages in the Ilocos Norte, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region on Luzon Island. Preliminary estimates place the damage to infrastructure and agriculture caused by the typhoon at over 1 billion pesos (approximately 17.77 million U.S. dollars). The Philippines, prone to meteorological upheavals, faces an average of 20 typhoons each year.
