Two Elephants Spark Curiosity in Zondoma Villages

Zondoma: Two elephants were spotted this Wednesday, January 14, 2026, in the villages of Tangaye and Danaoua, in the commune of Gourcy, AIB has learned.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Abdoul Kader Zongo, the provincial director in charge of the environment for Zondoma, stated that these elephants, a male and a female, are believed to have come from the nearby Sourou forest. The presence of these elephants has sparked considerable curiosity among the local population.

The elephants are being returned to their area of origin through the efforts of environmental agents. They were first observed the previous day, January 13, 2026, in the Lago area. The movement of these elephants has drawn attention due to the region's history with elephant populations.

According to the IUCN's African Elephant Status Report 2016, published in 2016 and cited by Fasocheck, Burkina Faso was home to the largest elephant population in West Africa in 2015, with an estimated 6,850 individuals and a statistical margin of error of ± 2,123 individuals. This statistic highlights the significance of elephant conservation in the region.

It is worth noting that elephants are fully protected animals in Burkina Faso, underscoring the importance of the efforts made by environmental agents to ensure the safe return of these elephants to their natural habitat.
