Nairobi: Nyandarua National Polytechnic, in collaboration with the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, has so far facilitated about 300 students to secure employment opportunities in the United Kingdom. The institution has also taken a leading role in promoting youth labour mobility through its participation in the Mkulima Majuu Programme, which seeks to link skilled Kenyan youth with overseas job opportunities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Nyandarua National Polytechnic Chief Principal, Dr. Felix Mung'atu, highlighted that many graduates have secured gainful employment in countries such as Dubai, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. This initiative has been instrumental in improving livelihoods and reducing unemployment among the youth. Dr. Mung'atu further noted that the polytechnic has significantly expanded its enrolment to accommodate more young people seeking technical and vocational training, with the student population growing from about 1,500 to nearly 10,000 learners. This reflects increased confidence in TVET institutions as centres of practical skills development.
'We have also rolled out new Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curricula to ensure our graduates meet the demands of modern industry,' said Dr. Mung'atu. He added that the institution is implementing the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, through which 74 candidates have successfully undergone assessment and certification of their skills.
Infrastructure development has also been prioritised at the institution, with ongoing general facelift works, upgrading of workshops, and modernisation of laboratories aimed at enhancing hands-on training and improving the learning environment. The Chief Principal said the polytechnic has strengthened partnerships with industry players to provide students with real-life work exposure through industrial attachments, mentorship, and apprenticeship programmes.
On the adoption of modern technology, Dr. Mung'atu revealed that the institution has already started training students on hybrid and electric vehicles, with two electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed at the polytechnic to support practical learning. 'Beyond academics, we are nurturing talent and creativity. Our Talent Development Centre has produced outstanding artists, confirming that we are not only building skilled professionals but also well-rounded citizens,' he added.
Looking ahead, Dr. Mung'atu said the institution aims to strengthen its position as a Centre of Excellence in agriculture, engineering, and renewable energy training.
