TURKANA — Julius Kavita assumed the role of Turkana County Commissioner on Tuesday, taking over from Jacob Ouma, with a commitment to advancing the government’s affordable housing program. During the handover ceremony, Kavita highlighted the importance of disseminating accurate information about the housing initiative to counter prevailing misconceptions.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kavita, who previously served as Deputy County Commissioner in Kirinyaga Central, was promoted and transferred to Turkana as part of a broader administrative reshuffle. His predecessor, Ouma, has been reassigned to Meru County in a similar capacity. Both administrators emphasized the critical role of civil servants in implementing the government’s development objectives, calling for teamwork and efficient use of resources.
Kavita specifically pointed out the affordable housing program as a key focus, urging public officers to educate the community to ensure widespread understanding and support for the initiative. He stressed the significance of collaboration among civil servants to fulfill the government’s agenda.
Ouma, reflecting on his tenure in Turkana, praised the collective efforts of government employees, which he credited with enhancing the county’s image and facilitating high-profile visits, including from the Head of State. He also mentioned the Senate’s Mashinani sessions held in Lodwar in September of the previous year, underscoring the positive impact of such events on local development.
The emphasis on education as a tool for improving security and reducing incidents of banditry and highway robberies was reiterated by both Kavita and educational leaders in the county. Susan Ereng, Principal of the Kenya Medical Training College, and Edwin Lubanga, Education County Director, lauded the peaceful environment and open governance during Ouma’s administration, expressing optimism for continued progress under Kavita’s leadership.
