Lodwar: Turkana County Government has issued the national flag to a team of eight players from Turkana who will be joining the national squad representing Kenya at the East African Local Authorities Sports and Culture Association (EALASCA) Games, scheduled in Kampala, Uganda at the end of this month.
According to Kenya News Agency, the players secured their spots in the national men’s and women’s basketball and darts, following their outstanding performance at the recently concluded Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) games. Turkana County won the national title in men’s basketball, along with other awards, prompting the selection of its top players.
The selected athletes include Men’s Basketball players Joel Kahaissa, Nelson Nowawe, Erod Wilfred, Edung Nicholas, and team captain William Mbotela. For Women’s Basketball, the team captain is Anjelin Asinyen. In Men’s Darts, Liwan Jacob was selected, and for Women’s Darts, Delvin Nangolo made the team.
The team is expected to join the rest of the Kenyan delegation for residential training before heading to Kampala, where they will face teams from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan.
During the flag issuance ceremony, Chief Officer for Sports and Vocational Training, Leah Losiru, hosted the team for a luncheon at the Lodwar Vocational Training Centre. She emphasized the importance of discipline and hard work, urging the players to make Turkana County and Kenya proud. Losiru also highlighted that the games would strengthen the East African spirit while providing a platform for county staff to showcase their talents, potentially opening doors to more competitive sporting opportunities.
James Nateleng, the Director of Sports, and Jackson Nakusa, the Deputy Director, were present at the ceremony.
