Turkana North, Kenya – In a notable advancement for agricultural education, 23 trainees celebrated their graduation on Friday from a comprehensive five-month training program in irrigated agriculture. This program, conducted by Furrows in the Desert (FID), a development project under the Lobur Catholic Mission, marks a significant step towards enhancing agricultural expertise in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the County Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, the training session was part of a broader initiative to bolster food security, a key priority of Governor Jeremiah Lomorukuai’s administration. The ceremony, which took place in Turkana North, underscored the importance of agricultural development in the area. Tioko, presiding over the event, praised the dedication and enthusiasm of the participants, particularly highlighting the women’s involvement in agriculture.
Tioko encouraged the female graduates to share their newfound knowledge with other women and youths in the community, emphasizing the role of education in empowering local agricultural practices. She also reassured FID officials of the County’s eagerness to continue collaborating, especially in areas that support the food security agenda.
Esau Emmanuel, the Deputy Director for Agriculture, acknowledged FID’s influential role in promoting agricultural activities in Turkana North. He expressed hope for the extension of such programs to additional regions, demonstrating the project’s potential for broader impact.
FID Director Falgas Macque challenged the graduates to effectively utilize their training and underscored the importance of their contributions to society. The event also saw the presence of key local officials, including Sub-county Administrator Ekwakai Lobeck, Sub-county Agriculture Officer John Lokuwom, and Sub-county Land Reclamation Officer Eliud Ewoi.
In addition to the graduation ceremony, the team inspected the ongoing developments at the Kokuro Drip Irrigation Project, further highlighting the region’s commitment to advancing agricultural practices.
