Nairobi, Kenya – Loroo Emmanuel Esekon, a volunteer at the Drilling Unit in the Department of Water Services, has emerged as a winner at the Presidential Innovation Challenge Award 2023, securing a cash prize of Sh 500,000. This achievement follows his earlier recognition with a trophy at the Devolution Heroes Competition in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, in August 2023.
According to Kenya News Agency, Esekon’s innovative work in creating a new model of the traditional Turkana stool, using climate-smart techniques and recycled waste metallic materials, garnered him global recognition. His commitment extends beyond innovation, as he actively mentors youth to engage in vocational skills training for future transformation. The prize money was awarded to Esekon through a cheque at the Kenya Innovation Week held at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi.
Esekon, also a TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) Ambassador, plans to participate in regional and international innovation challenges. The Presidential Innovation Award (PIA), under the Talanta Hela program run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports, aims to nurture the entrepreneurial capabilities of innovators across Kenya. The PIA recognizes and rewards the innovative efforts of leading innovators in the country, focusing on national priority areas. This initiative is designed to encourage and support young individuals who use their innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills to positively impact society and gain economic independence.
The goal of the Presidential Innovation Award is to promote innovation as a key driver for socio-economic development, fostering entrepreneurial mindsets and enhancing the commercialization capabilities of Kenyan innovators.
